Its time!! No, it’s not 1972 and Gough Whitlam is on stage singing with John Farnham…some images stay with you forever!
It’s Time to transform our Models of Care.
We must adopt the Virtual Care models our medical profession has put in place over the past few months and work through capabilities in a considered and methodical way.
This is why I have invited leading experts to share their unique perspectives on transforming models of care from a local and global perspective. Participants should expect a candid discussion that looks at the highs and lows of transforming models of care and to be invited to participate in evolving projects over the following months.
Who is attending?
Healthcare professionals delivering care and professionals tasked with healthcare governance and business continuity.
The variety of perspectives and backgrounds is what is going to make this discussion invaluable to all, our MC Dr Tim Smyth will ensure all participants leave with new insights into models of care.
Who is on the panel?
Leaving emergency rooms for emergencies
Energetic and inspiring Dr Justin Bowra, Founder and Medical Director, My Emergency Doctor; Senior Emergency Specialist (FACEM) at Royal North Shore Hospital who recently announced that My Emergency Doctor has been commissioned by South Western Sydney PHN, to provide the new My Emergency Doctor service. The new service gives patients the opportunity to access emergency specialist doctors for diagnosis and treatment of urgent, non-emergency medical conditions after-hours and on weekends. This is just one example of a model of care that can leave emergency rooms for emergencies.
Spearheading clinical & community efforts to use tech in health
Good friend Dr Mukesh Haikerwal. GP, in Medical Republic, quoted “You can’t do tomorrow what you do today and hope to succeed. The future is about innovation and new ways of doing business.” He is an advocate for accessible health and healthcare for all and his contribution to this discussion will be invaluable.
Models of care transforming rapidly
Digital evangelist Richard Taggart, CIO of the Sydney Local Health District. Richard is leading the team behind RPA Virtual Hospital, where the corona virus has fast-tracked the use of tech to ease burdens, introduce efficiencies and aid quality in care. He recently quoted in Healthcare IT news, “If I look at my digital strategy, things that I thought we might get to in year five of that strategy, we’ve done in 10 weeks.” Taggart said.
Challenges of new service models
Telehealth neighbourhood watch advocate Donna Parkes, Telehealth Manager, NSW Agency for Clinical Innovation she enjoys the challenge of development and integration of new service models, including the development of technology to assist access to care for rural & remote communities. Her hands-on experience in the development of service models will give us the guidance we need to progress.
As referenced in my previous update Dr Erkan Hassan, Co-Founder and Chief Clinical Officer | Sepsis Program Optimization will focus on how health service providers in the US are well into their journey of virtual care and what it took to get there.

It’s no coincidence that all the panellists in the discussion are involved in various models of care driven by technology, truth be told it was important that we selected experts who have been there and done it and continue to do it, resulting in a candid conversation. The themes discussed were varied from telehealth being described as a clinician standing by a patient’s bedside with their hands in their pockets to age not being a barrier to telehealth delivery.
The pandemic has triggered a sprint toward Virtual Care over the past 2 years, and now it’s time to ensure your Multi-Disciplinary Teams, or ‘MDT’s’, also have a way to communicate virtually and securely seamlessly with your hospital and clinicians, wherever they are.
