This year marks the 25th anniversary of InfoMedix, the digital medical record and content management solution whose products are used by some of the busiest and most well known healthcare providers in Australia.

Jeff Smoot joined the company in 2019 as CEO and kicked off an aggressive development strategy in partnership with some of the company’s longest standing clients, to upgrade the product and expand its offering to address the needs of a demanding sector.

Mr Smoot told Pulse+IT that when he joined the business, InfoMedix already had a prominent brand in the Australian healthcare industry – known for scanning records into a digitised format and having close relationships with clients.

“We wanted to use that foundation to build end-to-end cloud capability and update the on-premise product suite, enabling hospitals to move forward in their digital journey.”

Mr Smoot said that “when COVID hit, it would have been easy to abandon our plans and focus on keeping the lights on, but instead, with the support of our shareholders we pushed ahead.”

Coming out of Covid, InfoMedix unveiled four significant product developments including a cloud-based and modernised on-premise version of its well-established Digital Patient Chart developed in partnership with AWS; Coding Manager, a workflow tool co-designed with St John of God Health that identifies records ready for coding and accelerates revenue realisation; and an updated version of its Referral Manager product, developed in collaboration with Northern Health, Eastern Health and Monash Health, which was first launched in 2013.

In parallel, InfoMedix acquired Clinivid, a clinical communication platform that has since been fully integrated into the InfoMedix offering.

Clinivid enables clinical collaboration across healthcare environments, including public and private hospitals, community clinics and general practice. The Cancer Care module was co-designed with Ramsay Health Care.

“Post-Covid, we were extremely well positioned,” Mr Smoot said, adding that the results were evident in the company’s growth – with 150 hospitals nationally and over 1.5 billion clinical documents under their stewardship.

Building on this momentum, the company continues to strengthen its presence across both public and private healthcare, a dual focus that has shaped its technology upgrades and expansion strategy.

“Our roots are in public health, which has been a major driver of our commitment to advancing and upgrading our technology,” Mr Smoot said.

“We worked closely with St. Vincent’s Melbourne transitioning our solution to the AWS Cloud  becoming the first public hospital to do so. We also rolled out from four regional facilities in the Hunter New England LHD to all 35 in the first step in their digital strategy.

“We have strong expertise in integrating with EMRs like EPIC and Cerner in partnership with our public health clients.

“Our solution is deployed across Tasmania Health, ACT Health, Hunter New England LHD in NSW, and eight public health services in Victoria – representing 25 per cent of bed capacity in this sector,” Mr Smoot said.

“The company has significantly grown its presence in the private healthcare sector. Its partnership with St John of God in Victoria now extends across the hospital network nationwide. The solution is also in place across UnitingCare Health in Queensland and is currently being rolled out across the Ramsay network, Adeney Private, Cabrini, and another major healthcare organisation.”

Mr Smoot said this growth has been driven by the urgency to digitise clinical data and accelerate clinical coding. On completion of these projects, the company is on track to achieve 70 per cent of private bed capacity across the sector.

LEGACY

Mr Smoot said that when he joined the company, most of the staff had been with InfoMedix for 10 years or more, with some of those now having been with the organisation for “nearly the full 25 years.”

“When I joined, I found we had the friendliest, most collaborative, dedicated group of people I’ve had the good fortune to be a part of and culture is something we place as priority as new people join the organisation.”

He said “it was this combination of culture, deep expertise and enduring client trust that positions InfoMedix perfectly for its next chapter,” adding that the company was now embarking on an ambitious AI strategy working in close alignment with their clients, to deliver “smarter, faster and more intuitive solutions.”

Mr Smoot notes the company’s rapid rise is “anything but accidental.”

“It’s the story of an organisation that has been 25 years in the making, built on deep sector knowledge, trusted relationships and an unwavering commitment to innovation.”
